Another fantastic year was celebrated at PRSA Detroit’s Annual Meeting on Nov. 30. This year we made Greektown Casino-Hotel in downtown Detroit our home for the event.

While enjoying a truly fantastic meal, the evening kicked off with a keynote discussion titled “Don’t Throw Out the PR Playbook with the Bathwater” by Mark S. Lee, President of the Lee Group; Host of WXYT-AM’s “Small Talk”; Author of Crain’s “Small Talk” blog and Adjunct Professor at Eastern Michigan University. Mark reflected on the past year in PR, the media landscape and how strong our community is.

Our outgoing Chapter President Don Tanner spoke about this year’s activities and accomplishments and the health of our chapter.  Soon after, our 2017 board was announced and voted on by the membership. This included the passing of the gavel, as Tim Wieland, APR accepted his position as Chapter President for 2017. Tim is the PR and Media Manager at Bosch North America, and has big plans for the chapter’s future!  Thank you to Don for a great year!

Next, Sandy Hermanoff, APR, Fellow PRSA honored Mary Henige, APR, Fellow PRSA, who was recently inducted into the PRSA College of Fellows. There was endless gratitude in the room, as Mary has impacted many lives in the PR community. She’s been a professional advisor for the Wayne State University PRSSA Chapter for decades.

The chapter recognized this year’s new APRs. Congratulations to Stephanie Beres, APR, Stefan Cross, APR and Randy Jones, APR.

The evening also included the presentation of the PRSA Detroit Education Fund Scholarships.  This year, two students were awarded: Wayne State University’s Rebecca Cooper and Eastern Michigan University’s Anissa Gabbara.

Most special of all, was the surprise announcement of a new annual service award, the Nancy Skidmore Award for Distinguished Chapter Service. The inaugural award was, of course, presented by Don to Nancy Skidmore, who is so deserving of recognition for her many decades of service to the chapter.
