The annual Student and PR Mixer is and has always been one of my favorite PRSA Detroit events. This year, it was hosted at Ford’s Garage in Dearborn – a central location for students of Southeastern Michigan’s several great universities. Students and pros mixed and mingled while enjoying some delicious food at one of Dearborn’s top spots.
In PR, the value of interpersonal skills cannot be overstated. I remember being a student and enjoying this event specifically as an opportunity to chat with real pros and learn how to get more comfortable interacting. With a strong student and pro turnout this year, it was wonderful to see that interaction and know that these students are well on their way to being our next generation of pros.
Another great aspect of this event is the resume review. I provided constructive feedback wherever possible, but as a whole, the students were very on top of it already with attention to detail, appropriate formatting and design, and impactful information. If the resumes are any indication – and I know they are – the students who attended are putting their best foot forward as they make the transition from students to professionals.
As graduation for many of these students nears, I look forward to soon calling them professional colleagues. I hope they stay engaged with the chapter, attending events as new pros and helping the next generation along. One of the greatest parts about PRSA Detroit is our community; It’s up to all of us to participate and make sure it stays strong!
