July 4… a day to celebrate our independence, spend some time with friends and family, and gather around the grill for some tasty summer food. If you were celebrating America’s birthday this past week, you were far from alone. According to Wallet Hub, around 47 million Americans traveled 50+ miles for Independence Day festivities and Americans spent a collective $1.6 billion on beer and wine.
While many Americans like to celebrate the Fourth of July and show their patriotism, brands like to get in on the fun and show their patriotism too at times. Some of them do it very well, making ads that are inspirational and make you proud be an American. Below are a few of my favorites.
In my opinion, this is the best patriotic ad out there. Through engaging visuals – each a different facets of many things that could be considered ‘the American Experience’ – timed to match up with the words of the Star Spangled Banner, the ad is able to visualize our national anthem and create a feeling of being proud to be an American. The vibe that I get while watching it is one of resilience and pushing forward. The person waking up at 4 a.m., the athlete already training at daybreak, the Jeep Wrangler climbing a rugged hill as a “perilous fight…” all of them and many other visuals play into the feeling the ad creates.
This ad starts by simply asking, “What’s your dream?” When you think about it, that is a very American question.
The visuals of this ad show a diverse array of young, female athletes running forward, as if they are running towards their dream. In the end, they get there, as they are running onto the soccer field and a packed stadium chants “USA! USA! USA!” Similar the Jeep ad, the feeling I get from watching this ad is really one of pride. Believing you can achieve something and pursuing that goal until you achieve it. It ends with a simple message – “It’s only crazy until you do it – Just do it.” I think that fighting spirit and sense of pursuing your goals is American.
This is an oldie, but a goodie. Let’s start with the most important part… it’s narrated by Clint Eastwood. Name one person who is more American than Clint Eastwood. Exactly.
But beyond the fact that it’s narrated by my favorite Western movie star, it taps into that American resilience, even more so than the first two. This one focuses more on the struggles Americans endure and overcome, using Detroit as a centerpiece to that message. He ends the ad by saying, “This country can’t be knocked out with one punch. We get right back up again and when we do, the world’s going to hear the roar of our engines. It’s halftime, America, and our second half is about to begin.” I think this message really touches upon the adversity our country has overcome during its lifetime, and the adversity we as Americans overcome in our lives.
If done well, patriotic ads can inspire viewers. These are a few of many great patriotic ads. What are some of your favorites?
