We wouldn’t be able to have such a powerful PRSA chapter without our sponsors. We give our thanks to all our sponsors and love highlighting their contributions to the community and our chapter. Here, we highlight Benefactor Sponsor DTE Energy after chatting with Paula Silver, Vice President of Corporate Communications.
Tell us a little about your company (history, culture, vision, etc.).
While most people know DTE as the company that gives millions of Michigan homes and businesses electricity and natural gas, we also have nationwide energy-related businesses and services focused on power and industrial projects, renewable natural gas, natural gas pipelines, gathering and storage, and energy marketing and trading. As an environmental leader, DTE recently moved up our carbon-emissions goal by a full decade, pledging to reduce emissions by 80 percent by 2040. We are committed to accomplishing this in a way that works for Michigan’s economy, homeowners, and businesses, balancing reliability and affordability while minimizing our impact on the environment.
What do you look for in strong PR team member?
Our team is filled with smart, high-energy and passionate communicators who are relentlessly focused on doing right by our internal and external stakeholders. We are structured differently than many in-house departments in that we don’t have a separate team for each channel (media relations, social media, etc.). Our communicators are 360 – handling multichannel communications for the business partners they support across the enterprise. When hiring PR team members, we look for those who are proactive, strategic and creative in the way they solve business problems with integrated communications.
What are you doing to impact the greater Detroit area?
We’re passionate about our work because Michigan is home. Our decisions not only allow us to lead the way in energy, but also engage with local communities to create jobs, grow our middle class, and make life better in our state. We want to be more than just an energy provider, we want to be a resource for the communities we serve and, together, become a transformational force for good throughout the state.
What’s the number one thing you want the PR community to know?
We are a great place to work, and are always looking for top PR talent! DTE is in the top 3 percent of workplaces worldwide for employee engagement as measured by the Gallup Organization, and the top decile on Indeed’s list of 50 Best Places to Work among Fortune 500 companies. Both recognitions reflect direct feedback from our employees on how they feel about being part of our company – including our mission-driven culture, strong leadership, competitive pay and benefits, and positive, team-oriented workplace environment where everyone feels engaged and valued. You can check out careers.dteenergy.com to see job updates. You can also submit your email to get alerts every time we post a communications job.
What’s one fun/unique fact about your company that people may not know?
We have a dog! Her name is Nora, and she works at our headquarters and serves as a spokes-animal on social media. You can follow her at @NoraatDTE and see her at many of our community events.
Many thanks to DTE Energy for its sponsorship and support of our amazing PRSA Detroit community!
